Fall Break

This week we've had Fall Break, and it's been so fun to spend so much lazy time together.

We had a pet this week!  Ginger is the class pet for one of the kids, and we signed up to keep her over the break.  She's been a really easy pet.  She squeaks when she's hungry or thirsty, and she's pretty cute.  Maybe someday we'll get a guinea pig of our own.


This little guy also lost his first tooth!  He's 7 1/2 years old and still has all his baby teeth!  He's been pretty eager to lose a tooth and finally it happened.  He was so excited to get a visit from the tooth fairy.  "But she didn't leave a note." Oops, we'll have to ask her to do that next time.


We took a hike in Usury Park.  It was a short hike for the kids, but there was a nice view at the top, and a great park at the end.

(We forgot baby's hat, so we improvised with a pair of pants.)


This guy got a cut on his knee. He was brave about it.

Labor Day weekend.  Had to get out and explore Arizona!  We drove northeast through the Tonto National Forest to Apache Lake.  We had a fun swim and picnic.  It was a pretty amazing drive. Wilderness doesn't get much wilder than this.

Remembering Robyn

Today we visited the grave of my little sister Robyn. We talked about her life filled with difficulties and disabilities. She bravely chose this life and gracefully lived it. She could do very little for herself, but in doing little she taught me so much. I learned to serve without reward or praise and to love unconditionally. Her death was a great lesson about life for me as a 12 year old. During some rough patches in my youth, knowing she was in heaven kept me focused on staying on the path to join her. I have felt her calm and sweet influence in my life. I'm excited to meet her again someday and see the vibrant Fillmore girl she really is.

Homeschool Tips

We're doing our part by staying home... now what?? With the closing of schools, families are faced with the challenge of keeping kiddos learning. With my  extensive  homeschooling experience (all of 8 months, haha!), I thought I'd offer some helpful tips. I haven't been in this long, but I did have to go through the learning process very recently, so it's pretty fresh. Curriculum Curriculum is a fancy word for "what you are going to learn about." If schools don't give you guidelines, then you can choose what you like. There are so many resources out there. Pick what works for you and your kiddos. I love the Core Knowledge Sequence. It's exactly what I want my kids to know. Plus, they have  free materials  you can use. I download the units I want onto the Kindle so we can read them together on the couch. And the learning takes off from there as we discuss, research, and create as we please. We use  The Good and the Beautiful  curriculum for...
